HERMAN ALBRECHT WAS A TROOPER IN THE IMPERIAL LIGHT HORSE. THIS WEBSITE CONSISTS OF OFFICERS WHO WERE KILLED OR DIED OF WOUNDS IN THE ANGLO-BOER WAR OF 1899-1902. TROOPER ALBRECHT IS INCLUDED AS HE WAS AWARDED THE VICTORIA CROSS FOR FOR HIS ACTIONS DURING THE BATTLE ON WAGON HILL WHERE HE AND LIEUT. DIGBY-JONES LED THE FORCE THAT RE-OCCUPIED THE TOP OF THE HILL AT A CRITICAL MOMENT JUST AS THE THREE FOREMOST ATTACKING BOERS LED BY COMMANDANT DE VILLIERS REACHED IT. ALBRECHT SHOT DE VILLIERS , ONLY TO BE SHOT AND KILLED, HIMSELF, MOMENTS LATER. ORIGINALLY BURIED IN A MASS GRAVE ON WAGON HILL, BUT LATER REINTERRED IN THE BRITISH GARDEN OF REMEMBRANCE IN THE WAGON HILL CEMETERY. HIS NAME APPEARS ON THE I.L.H MEMORIAL IN THAT CEMETERY. Medal:
Trooper Albrecht was awarded the V.C., posthumously, as he would have been recommended for the Victoria Cross had he survived, on account of his having, during the attack on Wagon Hill (Ladysmith) of 6th January, 1900, displayed conspicuous bravery, and gallant conduct in leading the force which re-occupied the top of the hill Lieutenant Jones and the other two by Trooper Albrecht.
